Eat, Drink, Be Merry...

Christmas is well and truly on its way - and gosh it seems to get here a little faster each year, doesn't it? Not that I'm complaining. It is the BEST season, and a great time of the year for everyone lucky enough to be able to spend time with their family. As much as the season represents a time for celebration, though, it is also a time for work - especially for a mum with kids running around the house. The amount of time I will spend working on getting Christmas just right is more than worth it, but it is still exhausting!

One of the biggest parts of Christmas is entertaining friends and family, helping them to eat, drink and be merry even as I run around trying to make sure that things are perfect. It is amazing how much is done during this short season, and I have to admit that having a little bit of extra help doesn't hurt. Heck I will take help any way I can get it! And while I would love to say that every bit of entertaining and cooking that I do springs from my own imagination or from family recipes, I have been looking at a great book called Maggie's Christmas at Dymocks as a way to find some new recipes and to get some great holiday inspiration. Who doesn't love Maggie Beer, she has the best dips and quince paste ever! And her cook books are amazing. She is basically an Australian food icon.
Getting that boost of inspiration from Maggie just makes the holidays so much more fun. The book is full of great recipes and ideas for hosting parties, but it has also worked as a great jumping-off point for my own ideas. Just having something to work with that can save me a bit of time and energy is so helpful - especially when I'm trying to get things done as I'm dealing with the kids. Not to mention that without inspiration these days I can just stare blankly at a page for hours instead of getting a menu down! Not something I need to be dealing with this time of year. I love having a resource available that makes planning things easier, and I especially love how everything seems to keep in mind the fact that the season is actually supposed to be fun. Yep, it's something that we tend to forget in the rush isn't it.
I want to make sure that everyone is able to eat, to drink, and to actually be merry this year because I know that I will! Every Christmas is especially special with children around, and I hope that I am always this excited when the season comes around. Getting ready for the parties and the big day with Maggie's Christmas has been a real pleasure, and I cannot wait to see what I will be able to pull off with a little bit of time and ingenuity. I really do think that this year will be one of the best Christmases ever.
